Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a diverse cast of personalities, and a thrilling plot showcasing celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces growing in strength within the city.

Note: Key plot points for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 follow below.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

The third episode concluded with a major cliffhanger and presented the first table of characters who will split off from the main group to undertake their own adventure, apart from the other two tables.

This warrior group consists of the determined fighter (portrayed by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

Dividing the Cast

Considering an extensive roster, it was evident from the outset that having everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Overture, intertwining the personal journeys before dividing into three separate parties: Fighters, Schemers, and Seekers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for players who prefer a traditionally charged fight-heavy narrative style where peaceful solutions are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might seem out of place, but the actions of the latest installment show why these particular heroes are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Reasons to Leave

To begin with, the party knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose demise initiated the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, breaking into the hidden lair, assaulting the character, and stealing all the enchanted items to dispose of.

The traitor then cleared his obligations and escaped to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, above the city, with Cyd close behind.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to leave the city the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and trusted friend, seeks vengeance.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the region and cautions that it is a dangerous place.
  • The strong character and The healer, having disobeyed his house’s orders to eliminate the target and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their reputation as important members in the powerful family could help the group reach places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Furthermore, The fighter swore a life debt to The savior for his salvation and will now accompany him everywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the rulers that govern the city for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The healer turned against House Halovar and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the family.

This results in them no alternative but to travel to Timmony in search of Casimir.

What’s Next?

From episode three’s Cooldown, we find out that the warrior group won’t be around next week, leaving the other eight players to form the Explorers and Schemers tables.

Viewers can anticipate finding out which characters will be where in the season’s last Overture episode, streaming live on October 24.
